Samsung released three new foldable phones and raised the prices because apparently that's what you do when Apple might enter your market segment. Charge more. That'll show them.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, and Galaxy Z Flip8 now cost more than the previous models. Samsung's strategy here is fascinating in the way watching someone punch themselves in the face is fascinating. Apple hasn't even announced a foldable phone yet. They're just expected to. At some point. Maybe. So Samsung decided to make their products more expensive in anticipation of competition from a company known for charging premium prices. It's like preparing for a price war by shooting yourself in the foot.
The "Ultra" designation means it's bigger and costs more. That's the entire innovation. They made a phone that folds, then they made it larger, then they charged you more money for it. Revolutionary.
Retail traders are currently trying to figure out if this news means they should buy Samsung stock or sell it or maybe buy puts or perhaps calls or possibly just light their money on fire in the backyard. The answer is none of these things matter because Samsung's phone division could start manufacturing devices that give you electric shocks every thirty seconds and it wouldn't move the stock price more than half a percent.
Apple's expected debut of a foldable phone has been expected for approximately four years now. Any day now. Really close. Almost there. Samsung keeps releasing new models and raising prices while waiting for competition that exists exclusively in analyst reports and tech blog fever dreams.
The phones fold in half, which solves the critical problem of phones being too flat and not breaking often enough at the hinge.
