Chinese AI companies released models that work about as well as American ones but cost less. American companies responded by continuing to charge more. This is the entire story.

DeepSeek and Z.ai built language models that compete with OpenAI and Anthropic. They priced them lower. U.S. companies who pay for API calls looked at their invoices and thought maybe they should switch. Capitalism worked exactly as described in the textbook for once and everyone acted confused.

OpenAI spent years telling enterprise clients that frontier AI requires massive compute and even more massive bills. Then a company in Hangzhou built something comparable for the cost of a used Honda Civic and suddenly the pitch got harder. Anthropic charges premium rates because their models are constitutional or harmless or whatever the marketing copy says this quarter. Turns out Constitution Optional is a valid product tier.

The financial implications are clear. American AI companies either cut prices and admit their margins were f*cked from the start or they keep prices high and watch clients leave for Shenzhen. Both options involve explaining something uncomfortable to venture capitalists who believed AI would be the first technology in history with inelastic demand.

Retail traders who bought AI stocks at the peak because Jim Cramer said Nvidia would hit ten trillion dollars are now learning that competition exists. They thought American exceptionalism applied to gross margins. It does not.

The real problem is not that Chinese models work. The real problem is that they work for sixty percent less and nobody can explain where the other sixty percent was going.
