Alibaba Builds Servers, Morons Buy Shares

Alibaba announced it will manufacture semiconductors and rent out warehouse space. The stock jumped 3%. Congratulations to everyone who needed this information to make that decision.

The chip exists. The data centers will expand. These are facts a company press release told you on Tuesday morning. You read those facts and thought, "Finally, actionable intelligence." You opened your brokerage app. You bought shares of a Chinese e-commerce giant because it plans to do what every other tech company with a market cap above $100 billion is already doing. Revolutionary.

Here's what happened: Alibaba said words about artificial intelligence in a conference room. Investors heard those words. The price went up 3% in Hong Kong. That's the entire story. No revenue projections. No margin analysis. No competitive moat assessment. Just vibes and a number that moved slightly upward for six hours.

The data center buildout will be global, according to the announcement. Global means they will put computers in buildings in multiple countries. This is the plan. The shares jumped on the plan to put computers in buildings. Computing infrastructure as catalyst. Breathtaking stuff.

Retail traders saw the headline and thought they were early. They weren't early. They were reading a press release that 40,000 Bloomberg Terminal subscribers had already digested, modeled, and priced in before their coffee finished brewing. But sure, your Robinhood notification put you ahead of the curve.

The AI chip has specifications. Those specifications determine whether the product succeeds or becomes expensive silicon garbage. You don't know the specifications. You bought anyway. That's called conviction.

Alibaba stock closed up 3% because a company that makes money selling discount tube socks announced it will also make processors. The logical connection between these business lines is left as an exercise for the shareholder.
