Anthropic Begs for Handcuffs, Gets the Electric Chair

Anthropic has long been supportive of AI regulation, but the Trump administration is coming down particularly hard on the AI company.

Anthropic spent months telling Washington to regulate AI harder. They wrote letters. They testified. They asked nicely for rules that would crush their competitors but maybe leave them standing.

The Trump administration heard them out.

Then it decided to make an example of Anthropic specifically.

This is what happens when you volunteer to be the hall monitor. You get the armband and the whistle and everyone's resentment. Then someone bigger decides you're annoying and shoves you into a locker. Anthropic thought positioning themselves as the responsible AI company would earn them a gold star. Instead they got a target on their back the size of a data center.

The playbook was obvious. Be the good kid in class. Raise your hand. Tell the teacher other students are cheating. Hope the teacher gives you extra credit and detention to everyone else. Works great until the teacher decides the snitch is the real problem.

Washington went further than Anthropic wanted because Washington always does. You cannot ask the government to intervene a little bit. That is not how this works. You open the door and they kick it off the hinges. Anthropic wanted a moat. They got an investigation.

Somewhere in San Francisco a compliance officer is updating their resume and wondering if maybe they should have just built the chatbot and kept their f*cking mouth shut.
