Bessent Schedules Pointless Meeting Before Pointless Summit

Scott Bessent sat down with He Lifeng to discuss trade, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals. None of these topics will matter to your portfolio by October. Both men know this. They're meeting anyway because calendars were open and someone had to justify the travel budget.

The talks happened ahead of the Trump-Xi summit scheduled for September 24th. That's the real event where nothing will happen. This meeting exists so both sides can pretend they prepared. It's a pre-game show for a game that ends 0-0.

Retail traders are already pricing in outcomes based on which vice premier shook hands longer. They're scanning body language in photos like it's the Zapruder film. Someone on Reddit just posted a 47-slide deck analyzing He Lifeng's tie color as a bullish signal for rare earth ETFs. The thesis includes Fibonacci retracements.

Critical minerals came up in conversation. You know what else is critical? Not blowing up your account because two bureaucrats had tea and you decided it meant copper futures were about to rip. AI was discussed too, which means absolutely nothing got decided except that both countries agree AI sounds important when you say it out loud.

The summit happens in four days. Bessent and He Lifeng will brief their bosses. Trump and Xi will meet. They'll release a joint statement full of words like constructive and productive and ongoing dialogue. Markets will move 2% in both directions within an hour. By the following Tuesday every agreement will be walked back on Twitter.

Your technical levels don't care who met with whom. Support holds or it doesn't. The 200-day moving average isn't reading the joint communique.

Bessent flew all the way to China to accomplish what a conference call couldn't, which is to say nothing at all but in person.
