A Finnish town installed a giant battery made of sand. Not lithium. Not some rare earth metal that requires strip-mining half of Congo. Sand. The stuff kids throw at each other at the beach.
The battery stores heat from renewable energy when the sun shines or the wind blows. Then it releases that heat later when Finland remembers it's located in a frozen hellscape where daylight is a suggestion half the year. Brilliant plan. Store summer heat for winter. Nobody thought of this before because apparently we needed Finns to point out that sand gets hot and stays hot.
This solves intermittency, which is the polite word for "sometimes the power just f*cking stops." Wind dies. Sun sets. Grid collapses. Pensioners freeze. But now Finland heats sand to 500 degrees Celsius and pipes that warmth into homes when needed. Revolutionary technology last used by Romans heating bathhouses.
The battery is commercial scale. Meaning someone looked at a pile of sand, saw a business model, and convinced investors this wasn't a joke. Those same investors probably passed on Apple in 1980 because computers seemed risky.
Retail traders will hear about this and start buying shares in any company with "thermal" or "storage" in the name. They'll ignore that this specific solution works in a town of 12,000 people where district heating already exists. They'll miss that scaling this to Los Angeles requires approximately all the sand in the Sahara. They'll buy anyway.
Finland solved a problem by thinking smaller and dumber. They didn't engineer some quantum battery that costs more than Portugal's GDP. They heated up sand. Next week they'll probably announce a revolutionary new transportation technology called "the wheel."
The world's largest sand battery is now operational in Finland, proving that the energy transition's biggest innovation is remembering that hot things stay hot.
