Big Tech spent a trillion dollars on data centers and now wants credit for having money left over. Operating cash flow looks great. Free cash flow looks like a dumpster fire behind a failing Wendy's. The difference is capital expenditures, which is a fancy term for buying sh*t you need to stay in business.
Hyperscalers are Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and whatever else we're calling companies that own enough servers to simulate God. They're printing operating cash flow because cloud services generate revenue like a rigged slot machine. Then they take that cash and immediately light it on fire building AI infrastructure that may or may not justify its existence by 2030.
Free cash flow is operating cash flow minus capital expenditures. It's the money you have left after paying for everything you actually need. Big Tech has none of it. They're spending every dollar on GPUs and data centers because Jensen Huang needs a fifth leather jacket factory.
Retail traders see negative free cash flow and panic. They think the companies are broke. They're not broke. They're just choosing to spend everything on a speculative arms race that makes the Cold War look fiscally responsible.
The headline says this only tells part of the investment story. The other part of the story is that you're supposed to believe spending infinity dollars on AI training will eventually pay off. Maybe it will. Maybe we're building the world's most expensive chatbots that can't count the letter R in strawberry.
Technical analysts don't care about cash flow. We draw lines on charts and pretend the lines mean something. A company could have negative free cash flow for a decade and the stock still goes up because momentum is a hell of a drug. The fundamentals are for people who like lying to themselves with different lies than we use.
Your neighbor bought Microsoft because he heard operating cash flow was strong. He has no idea what capital expenditures are. He'll be fine anyway because the market rewards ignorance more consistently than it rewards research.
