Republican Rep. Thomas Massie wants to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for doing war stuff in Iran without asking Congress first. Filed the articles himself. Put his name on it. The same Congress that confirmed Hegseth seven months ago now contains at least one member who thinks he should be removed for following orders that came from somewhere.
Hegseth executed Iran war orders. Massie says that required approval. Hegseth apparently disagrees or doesn't care. The Constitution has thoughts on this but everyone stopped reading around Article II.
Here's what matters for your portfolio: absolutely nothing. Defense contractors already priced in every possible Middle East scenario including the ones where we impeach our own Cabinet members mid-conflict. Lockheed Martin doesn't care who signs the purchase orders as long as someone signs them. Raytheon stock moved 0.3% on the news, which in market terms means this story ranks somewhere between a Tastykake recall and a delayed Southwest flight.
Massie represents Kentucky's 4th district. He's done this kind of thing before. Votes against spending bills. Files impeachment articles. Stands on principle while Rome burns or whatever the saying is. His constituents probably love it. The defense budget passed anyway.
The impeachment will go nowhere. It always goes nowhere. The articles will sit in committee until everyone forgets why they were filed. Hegseth will still be Defense Secretary next month. Iran will still be Iran. Congress will still be mad about not being consulted on things they definitely were consulted on but ignored because it was a Wednesday and Wednesdays are for fundraising calls.
