Sam Altman spent years building the fastest AI engine on the planet and now wants everyone to pump the brakes. The man turbocharged a technology race that has every tech company burning cash like it's kindling, and his solution is cooperation. At the UN. With Trump calling it a globalist scheme.
Dario Amodei from Anthropic joined him. Two guys who run companies designed to outpace each other want to temper the pace of development. That's like watching drag racers ask for a speed limit after they've already crossed the finish line and lapped everyone twice.
Trump rebuffed the whole thing. Called it what every populist calls every multilateral agreement. Altman and Amodei probably expected that. They went anyway. Gave speeches about managing potential risks. Risks their companies created. Risks their companies continue to amplify while the world figures out what cooperation means.
Retail traders are now convinced this is bullish for AI stocks because slowing down development means less competition. They think regulatory capture is a moat. They're pricing in cooperation like it's a dividend yield. Gary from Peoria just bought $MSFT calls because if OpenAI slows down, Microsoft wins. Gary does not understand that slowing down is not the same as stopping, and stopping is not the same as Gary making money.
The UN will form a committee. The committee will draft a framework. The framework will get ignored by China. Altman will go back to San Francisco and keep training models. Amodei will do the same. Trump will tweet about globalists again. None of this will matter because the race doesn't stop when two guys ask nicely at a podium.
Asking your competitors to slow down after you've already built the lead is not cooperation. It's strategy with a humanitarian press release attached.
