The Department of Justice is investigating who leaked information to The New York Times about security concerns with President Trump's new Air Force One. The plane was donated by Qatar. Yes, donated. A country gave the President of the United States an airplane and someone at the DOJ is mad that reporters wrote about whether it might have security problems.
Google also received subpoenas in this investigation. The tech company that knows every embarrassing thing you've ever searched at 2 AM is now being asked to hand over information about journalists. The same journalists who reported on a plane gifted by a foreign government. You accept a flying tube from Qatar and the story becomes about punishing the people who asked questions.
Trump defended the subpoenas. Defended them. The man who received a free aircraft from a Middle Eastern monarchy is upset that anyone found out there might be issues with said aircraft. The logic checks out if you've suffered repeated head trauma.
Retail traders are currently trying to figure out which defense contractor stock to buy based on this news. They're scanning Reddit threads titled "Qatar Plane Leak Play?" and "Is this bullish for Boeing?" The plane was donated. It cost Trump zero dollars. There is no trade here. But that won't stop someone named Kyle from buying call options on Raytheon because he saw the words "Air Force" and "investigation" in the same headline.
The DOJ wants to know who told the Times about security concerns. Not who accepted a plane from a foreign government. Not who signed off on using that plane. Who talked about it. Priorities sharper than a bowling ball.
The whole thing would make a great movie if anyone could believe the plot.
