The Senate passed a bill imposing sanctions on Russian oil purchasers. Named it after Lindsey Graham. Breezed through. Heads to the House now.
Graham gets his name on legislation that punishes people for buying oil from a country he doesn't like. This is the political equivalent of getting your name on a park bench, except the bench also f*cks over global energy markets. The senator from South Carolina, a state whose primary exports are humidity and regret, now has a sanctions package as a trophy. Put it right next to his collection of Sunday show appearances that moved zero votes.
The bill targets oil purchasers. Not Russia directly. The purchasers. Brilliant strategy. Punish the customers instead of the supplier. Like arresting everyone who bought a Ford Pinto instead of recalling the exploding car. Economic warfare by way of making everyone else's life harder while Russia watches and adjusts its client list.
Retail traders are already pricing this into their portfolios. By which I mean they're panic-buying energy ETFs they can't spell and won't understand until the margin call arrives. Some guy in Phoenix just went long on Brent crude futures because he saw "Russia" and "sanctions" in the same sentence and thought he was early to the trade. He wasn't early. He's never early. He's the liquidity.
The House still has to vote on it. Graham's legacy hangs in the balance. Will his name grace a sanctions bill that accomplishes nothing measurable but sounds tough in a press release? Or will it die in committee and force him to settle for being remembered as the guy who said things on television?
Either way, Russian oil will find buyers, Graham will find cameras, and your technical indicators will continue not giving a sh*t about any of it.
