Someone Just Lit $48 Million on Fire in 20 Minutes

A trader sold 116,000 call options on GLD with a 420 strike price expiring September 18th. The whole thing took twenty minutes. Monday morning. Market just opened. Someone woke up and decided this was the move.

The position caps their upside at $420 per share. Gold's been ripping. GLD closed Friday around $238. So this person collected premium in exchange for promising to sell shares at $420 if gold decides to climb 76% in three weeks. They sold 116,000 contracts. Each contract is 100 shares. That's 11.6 million shares of exposure.

Two possibilities here. First: they own the shares already. It's a covered call. They're collecting pennies while gold potentially runs to new highs and they sit there watching their upside evaporate because they needed the premium that badly. Imagine owning something that's working and then paying someone else to take your profit. Genius.

Second possibility: they don't own the shares. It's naked. They sold calls on 11.6 million shares they don't have because they're certain gold won't move 76% in three weeks. They're right about that part. Gold's not going to $420 by September 18th. But being right isn't the same as being smart. They tied up margin and took on theoretically unlimited risk to collect premium on a position so far out of the money it might as well be on Neptune.

The options market is buzzing, apparently. Everyone's trying to figure out what this means. What signal is being sent. What insider knowledge this represents. Here's what it means: someone had 116,000 contracts to sell and they sold them. That's it. That's the whole story.

But retail traders will spend the next week analyzing this like it's the Zapruder film, convinced there's a secret message hidden in the Greeks, while the person who made the trade is already on to something else, probably equally stupid.
