South Korea just raised its hand to organize a playdate between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un. This marks the third or fourth time someone has tried to get these two in a room together and call it diplomacy. The word "renegade" is doing Olympic-level gymnastics here. North Korea isn't renegade. North Korea is North Korea. Calling them renegade is like calling a shark "kind of bitey."
The opportunity for peace apparently hinges on whether Trump wants to fly halfway around the world to shake hands with a dictator for the cameras again. Last time this happened, we got commemorative coins and exactly zero denuclearization. But sure, let's run it back. Maybe this time will be different. Maybe this time Kim will say "you know what, I've been thinking about your points regarding missile tests" and Trump will say "I really respect your input on this matter" and they'll hug it out while doves fly overhead.
South Korea sees opportunity the way a retail trader sees opportunity when they buy a stock that's down 40% in a week. Technically the word applies. Doesn't mean it's smart.
The best part is calling this a push. South Korea is pushing for a summit the same way you push for your friend to text his ex at 2 a.m. You know it won't end well. You know everyone will regret it. But you're bored and you want to see what happens.
Trump gets another photo op. Kim gets legitimacy. South Korea gets to spend six months planning seating arrangements for two geriatric toddlers who might tweet something insane at any moment. Everyone wins, assuming your definition of winning includes absolutely nothing changing except the date on the press release.
The technical setup here is crystal clear: geopolitical theater bounces off resistance at the "anyone gives a sh*t" level and closes flat on volume that wouldn't move a penny stock.
