Truist Analyst Thinks You'll Buy a Toaster With ChatGPT

Best Buy is likely to see more upside on several market trends, including the continued integration of AI into consumer technology, per Truist Securities.

Best Buy will outperform because consumer products will integrate AI. Truist Securities said this. They get paid to say things.

The thesis requires you to believe that adding a language model to your blender justifies a stock price target revision. It requires you to believe that consumers who currently own functioning refrigerators will replace them with refrigerators that can generate poems about leftover chicken. It requires you to believe that the delta between a coffeemaker and a coffeemaker that responds to voice commands represents a material shift in Best Buy's addressable market rather than a marketing gimmick that will be deprecated in eighteen months.

Truist looked at the entire landscape of consumer electronics retail. Collapsing margins. Amazon eating share. Showrooming so severe that Best Buy employees now just help customers find better prices online. They saw all of it. Then they saw that Nvidia went up and decided AI must be the answer.

The analyst did not specify which AI features would drive foot traffic. Did not quantify the attach rate on smart microwaves. Did not explain why a consumer would pay Best Buy's margin when Amazon sells the same AI-enabled garbage disposal for thirty percent less with free shipping.

But they did upgrade the stock. Because products will have AI in them. This is the level of rigor that separates sell-side research from a drunk guy at a party who owns three shares of Tesla.

Retail traders will read the headline. They will buy calls. They will discover that analyst price targets are not legally binding prophecies. Then they will explain on Reddit that market makers conspired against their position, when the real conspiracy was thinking a toaster that writes sonnets changes anything about big box retail economics.
