Two Guys Named Bessent and He Plan to Solve Everything

The U.S. Treasury's Scott Bessent and China's He Lifeng are holding talks on AI, trade, and critical minerals. Three topics. One meeting. Zero chance your portfolio benefits from knowing this happened.

Bessent flies across the Pacific to discuss artificial intelligence with a country that already stole every AI breakthrough worth stealing and trade policy with a nation we've been threatening to tariff since your grandfather was losing money on penny stocks. They'll also cover critical minerals, which sounds important until you remember rare earth elements have been a geopolitical flashpoint for fifteen years and your lithium stock is still down 60% from its meme peak.

Retail traders will read this headline and think it means something. They'll check their Chinese EV positions. They'll Google "critical minerals ETF." They'll convince themselves Scott Bessent wakes up in the morning wondering how to help Todd from Minneapolis break even on his BABA calls. He does not.

These talks will produce a joint statement using the word "constructive" four times and "mutually beneficial framework" twice. Markets will not move. Nothing will be resolved. Bessent will return to Washington. He will return to Beijing. Both will attend seven more meetings just like this one over the next eighteen months, each with a slightly different list of topics, each covered breathlessly by Reuters, each mattering exactly as much as this one.

You could spend your evening reading the full transcript when it leaks. You could parse the diplomatic language for hints about semiconductor export controls. You could build a watchlist of rare earth mining companies. Or you could accept that two government officials talking about important-sounding things has the same predictive value for stock prices as a coin flip performed by a drunk circus clown, and both have better historical accuracy than your last three technical setups combined.

Bessent and He will fix the global economy right after you nail that inverse head-and-shoulders pattern you've been drawing on your chart for six weeks.
