Trump banned three media outlets yesterday. Today those outlets can't get into the White House. The causation here is less complicated than a market order.
MS NOW got blocked. CNN got blocked. Politico got blocked. Their crime was covering Trump in a way that made Trump mad. This is like your broker banning you for complaining about execution quality, except the broker runs the country and you're supposed to pretend it's normal.
The White House didn't issue a statement explaining the decision. They didn't need to. When you ban someone and then enforce the ban the next day, the subtext writes itself. It's the most honest thing a press office has done in years.
Retail traders watched this unfold and immediately checked if media consolidation plays were up. They weren't. Because banning journalists doesn't move markets. Nothing moves markets except the thing you didn't think mattered until thirty seconds after you closed your position.
The blocked journalists stood outside like teenagers who got fake IDs rejected at a casino. Except the casino is supposed to be a democracy and the bouncer is an elected official who tweets at 3 AM about crowd sizes.
CNN probably thought their credentials meant something. MS NOW likely believed access was a right. Politico might have assumed institutional norms still applied. All three were wrong in the same way day traders are wrong about pre-market volume predicting anything.
This is what happens when you confuse an invitation with a constitutional guarantee. The First Amendment says the government can't throw you in jail for writing mean things. It doesn't say they have to let you into the building while you do it.
Tomorrow a different outlet gets banned. Next week it's someone else. By next month the only reporter allowed in will be a guy from a blog called Freedom Eagle Truth News who asks if the President has considered being even more handsome. His credentials will never expire.
