Mircea Dobre upgraded Deere to outperform. The company that builds tractors has been on fire in 2026. Not actual fire. Stock fire. The kind where line goes up.
Baird's analyst looked at a chart. Saw it pointing northeast. Decided northeast could become more northeast. Upgraded from neutral, which is analyst-speak for "I had no opinion but now I do because I need to justify this job."
Deere makes tractors. Farmers buy tractors. Farmers need tractors regardless of what Mircea Dobre thinks about the stock price. The tractors work the same on Monday whether the rating is outperform or underperform. The crops don't grow faster because Baird got bullish.
But retail traders will read this upgrade. They'll see "outperform" and think they've discovered alpha. They'll market-buy at 9:31 AM. They'll tell themselves they're early. They're not early. They're reading a headline that seventeen algorithms parsed in microseconds three hours before they woke up.
The beautiful part is Deere was already up before the upgrade. Been on fire all year, the headline says. So Dobre waited until after the move to say more move coming. Predicted the past, then extrapolated. That's the whole job. Wait for something to happen, then say it will keep happening. If it does, you're a genius. If it doesn't, you downgrade and say conditions changed.
Somewhere a farmer is fixing a transmission on a $400,000 combine. He doesn't know Baird exists. His tractor runs on diesel, not analyst ratings.
The upgrade assumes returns predict more returns, which is momentum, which works until it doesn't, which is when Dobre will downgrade and some other retail trader will buy that dip all the way to the bottom.
