Anthropic spent billions building Claude. China downloaded it for free and started selling knockoffs on the dark web at discount prices. Foreign adversaries have been scraping American AI models, copying the weights, and undercutting the original on price. This is the business equivalent of filming a movie with a camcorder in a theater and then complaining the popcorn was overpriced.
The distillation process works like this. You query the expensive model thousands of times. You feed those responses into your cheaper model. Your model learns to mimic the expensive one without ever seeing the actual code. It's called model theft and it's been happening for years but now it's happening on Tor because apparently even hackers need privacy when they're ripping off AI labs.
Anthropic is furious. They should be. They raised hundreds of millions to train Claude and now some guy in Shenzhen is selling Claude-but-worse for eight dollars a month on a forum that also sells stolen credit cards. The dark web marketplace for pirated AI is thriving. Competitors are buying access. The models perform worse than the originals but they cost ninety percent less so nobody cares.
China is the primary culprit according to the headline. Foreign adversaries sounds scarier than teenagers with Python scripts but the outcome is identical. Anthropic's competitive moat evaporates. Their differentiation becomes a rounding error. Every improvement they ship gets copied within weeks.
Retail traders who bought into the AI hype are now learning that intellectual property means nothing when your product is made of math and your adversary doesn't recognize copyright law. They thought they were investing in the future. They were actually buying a stake in the world's most expensive training data set for a foreign military.
Anthropic can sue. They can file complaints. They can beg regulators to do something. Meanwhile their model is already on the dark web next to fentanyl listings and fake passports, marked down like it's Black Friday at a failing department store.
