AXP Platinum: Pay $895, Sleep Two Nights, Cook Pasta With Strangers

American Express now sells Airbnb stays inside Amex Travel. Platinum cardholders get a $250 Airbnb Experiences credit. Cooking classes. Food tours. Guided hikes.

You pay $895 a year for a metal card. Amex now wants you to hike with a man named Gary.

Here's the catch. The credit stays locked until you book a prepaid Airbnb Luxe stay of two nights or more. The host must accept it. If the host cancels, the credit locks again. Your $250 depends on a stranger's mood.

Not all Airbnbs count. Only Luxe. Booked through Amex Travel. Two nights minimum. This is not a perk. This is a hostage negotiation with a loyalty program.

Now the tightening. Starting January 1, 2027, the $600 credit, now renamed the Lodging Credit, no longer covers one-night stays at Fine Hotels + Resorts. Amex handed you a bigger menu and shortened your fork.

Retail traders who bought a $600 hotel room for one night to claim a $300 credit now face a hard choice. Stay a second night. Sit in the robe. Contemplate a life where the spreadsheet is the vacation.

Platinum cardholders earn 5 points per dollar on eligible prepaid Airbnb bookings through Amex Travel. Most other eligible Membership Rewards cards earn 2. Congratulations on the points. Spend $4,000 to get a free cooking class.

Amex says the credit amount is unchanged. Still $300 per half-year. Still $600 total. The rename is free. Amex loves free things it gives itself.

Nobody asked for Airbnb inside a card built around lounges and concierge hotels. But nobody asked for the Centurion Lounge charcuterie either, and you still fought a stranger for the last cheese cube.

Your annual fee buys you a second night in a hotel you didn't want and a pottery class you'll cancel.
