Citi relaunched the AAdvantage Executive Mastercard with over $600 in new benefits. They also raised the annual fee. The lounge access supposedly justifies the entire thing.
This is what passes for innovation in 2026. A bank took a credit card. Added benefits you will forget exist. Raised the price. Called it refreshed. Marketing departments everywhere just achieved climax.
The math works if you fly constantly and remember to use every single perk like a disciplined accountant tracking receipts in a spiral notebook. You won't. Nobody does. You'll swipe it twice at airport Hudson News locations and wonder why your statement looks like a ransom note.
Lounge access remains the selling point. You get to sit in a room with stale croissants and businessmen in fleece vests checking their portfolios on iPads. This is the dream. This is what American Express built an empire on. Mediocre baked goods and free wifi that barely loads CNBC.
The additional benefits far outweigh the cost increase according to someone who definitely works in content marketing for a travel blog. They ran the numbers. They assumed you would use every credit. They assumed you are not a f*cking moron who will activate this card and immediately use it to buy gas at a Shell station for zero bonus points.
Retail traders will apply for this because they saw Executive in the name. They will pay the annual fee. They will visit exactly one lounge. They will expense a $14 sandwich they could have bought in the terminal. They will feel like Warren Buffett for six minutes.
Citi launched this card knowing the average holder will extract maybe $150 in actual value while congratulating themselves for being savvy with credit card rewards programs they understand about as well as options Greeks.
