CNBC Ranks People Who Will Take Your Money Alphabetically

CNBC published a list of the top 100 financial advisors for 2026. They ranked them. They used criteria. The criteria definitely matters when the advisor's main job is moving your retirement account into a 60/40 portfolio and then sending you a holiday card with their dog on it.

The methodology probably involved assets under management. It always does. The guy managing $8 billion for three hedge funds gets the same ranking boost as the guy managing $8 billion for 4,000 divorced dentists who think municipal bonds are exciting. These are identical skill sets.

CNBC also included tips on how to pick the best financial planner for you and your family. Step one is apparently reading a list made by a cable network that runs eighteen hours of people yelling about Fed policy. Step two is trusting that the advisor who made the list won't immediately use it in every marketing email until you're dead. There is no step three.

The best part is the timing. They released the 2026 list in 2026. Not a prediction. Not a forecast. Just a ranking of who is currently good at the job they were already doing. It's like ESPN ranking the best quarterbacks after the Super Bowl and acting like they discovered something. Bold work.

Retail traders will see this list and think it's for them. It's not. If you need a financial advisor, you don't have enough money to get a meeting with anyone on this list. You'll get their associate. The associate will be 27. He'll have you in target-date funds before you finish explaining what a target-date fund is.

The real innovation here is convincing people that financial advice is so complicated you need a professional with a CNBC ranking instead of a calculator and self-control. Turns out the best financial advisor for your family is the one who charges you the least to tell you to stop buying shit you can't afford.
