Wall Street has discovered that owning more restaurants is better than owning fewer restaurants. Genius. Someone get that man a spreadsheet.

Brinker owns Chili's and Maggiano's. Darden owns Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, and a handful of others. Their shares are outpacing McDonald's and Chipotle. The theory: diversify the menu of chains, and you diversify the risk.

Earnings will test it. That means a CFO reads numbers aloud and you pretend the chart already told you.

Consider the Chipotle shareholder. One brand. One burrito. One bowl, which is the same burrito wearing a hat. He believed focus was a virtue. The market now says focus is a personality disorder.

Consider McDonald's. Roughly forty thousand locations, one logo, and still called a single-chain stock, as if a company that size has any business being lonely.

Now consider you. You bought Chipotle in a bull market because the guac looked honest. Today you are rotating into Darden because a headline said portfolios of restaurants beat restaurants. Your thesis is a pile of breadsticks.

The chart does not care how many brands a company owns. Price is price. Support is support. Chili's and Olive Garden do not appear on a candlestick. Only your panic does.

Here is the real test. A company can own ten restaurant brands and still serve you the same disappointment in ten different fonts. Diversification is just failure with better branding.

Buy Darden if you must. Nobody at Olive Garden has ever been fired for your losses, and the breadsticks stay unlimited, unlike your margin.
