Markets reacted to Barr's comments and a hot inflation print by deciding the Fed will hike in October. Not September. October. The extra month gives everyone time to be wrong with more confidence.
S&P Global's inflation measure hit its highest level since October 2022. That's the metric. Not CPI. Not PCE. The one from S&P Global that nobody mentioned until right now. Turns out we've been watching the wrong number this whole time. Retail traders everywhere updating their spreadsheets to include a data series they learned existed four hours ago.
Barr said some words. The words implied something about monetary policy. Markets heard those words and immediately began pricing in a rate hike for a month that's half a year away. This is the same crowd that reprices everything every fifteen minutes based on which Fed governor coughed during a panel discussion.
October 2026 is apparently when the Fed will hike. Not because of economic conditions in October. Because of what Barr said in September and what inflation did in September. The six-week forward curve now reflects the certainty of people who've been certain about twelve different things since breakfast.
Barr works at the Fed. He said something about policy. That's the whole story. A guy with a title said words and now October has a probability attached to it. By November those same probabilities will point to March. By March they'll point to never. By never they'll point to yesterday.
The inflation reading was hot. Hot compared to what everyone expected after they were wrong about the last print. S&P Global measured it. S&P also rates securities and publishes indices and apparently tracks inflation in a way that matters today but didn't matter last month.
Day traders are now Fed experts with October circled on calendars they bought specifically to circle October on.
