The European Union just announced major funding for Greenland. Trump wants to buy Greenland. Iceland voted against joining the EU. These three facts are connected only if you believe geopolitics works like a f*cking game of Risk.
Greenland has fifty-six thousand people and gets half its budget from Denmark already. The EU walks in with a checkbook right when Trump starts talking annexation. Pure coincidence. Nothing says "we respect your sovereignty" like showing up with cash the moment someone else tries to buy you.
Trump claims national security grounds. For Greenland. The place where polar bears outnumber military threats. Apparently the strategic value lies somewhere between the melting ice sheet and whatever rare earth minerals nobody bothered extracting when it was cheaper to just buy them from China.
Iceland rejected EU membership talks in the same news cycle. Icelanders looked at this continental bidding war and said no thanks. Smart move. Why join a trade bloc when you can just watch them throw money at your neighbor because an American real estate guy got bored?
Retail traders are already scanning for Greenland ETFs. They will find Danish stocks. They will buy them. They will not understand why.
The EU funding boost solves nothing. Greenland still belongs to Denmark. Trump still cannot buy it. Iceland still wants no part of Brussels. But everyone gets to pretend they did something meaningful while the only people who actually live in Greenland watch foreigners argue about their future like they are not in the room.
Fifty-six thousand people just became the most popular girl at prom, and all it took was American imperialism and European guilt money showing up at the same time.
