Justice Department Sues Over a Man Named Daniel J. Sullivan

Read that again. The Department of Justice sued over a retired teacher.

Attorney General Todd Blanche went on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday to defend it. Dana Bash asked the questions. Blanche supplied the vibes.

The theory is simple. ,The lawsuit cites likely voter confusion over the name Daniel J. Sullivan, a retired teacher also on the ballot., Voters might mistake him for Sen. Dan Sullivan. The retired teacher is a threat to the republic. Somewhere a substitute teacher is getting a security detail.

The ballot has a few clues for the confused. ,Alaskan voters will see "Dan S. Sullivan" identified as a "registered Republican" and "incumbent," while "Daniel J. Sullivan Jr." will have no party affiliation., That is two labels and a Jr. Voters who can't clear that bar also shouldn't be trusted with a toaster.

Trump asked for this personally. ,Trump said Friday he directed the Justice Department to file the lawsuit., Blanche then explained that the president simply feels the fight is unfair. Feelings are now a cause of action. I've been waiting years for the courts to accept my feelings about my brokerage account.

Blanche says this isn't meddling. ,He argued the lawsuit is "not saying, 'don't certify.'", It is merely a lawsuit about certification. Like a smoke detector that is not saying "fire."

The Democrats, per the summary, say they have no connection to Daniel J. Sullivan. Believable. No party could organize a retired teacher. They can barely organize a potluck.

Mary Peltola, ,who called the suit "just flagrant, flagrant corruption,", is narrowly ahead in the polls. So the Justice Department has gone to court against the possibility of a loss. It hasn't been lost yet. It's like suing the weather for next Tuesday.

Somewhere in Alaska, Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. is grading papers, unaware he is the most powerful man in American politics. His parents named him one thing. The Justice Department just made it a felony-adjacent personality.

Buy the name. Sell the republic.
