Mercari Bans Pikachu, Destroys Portfolio in the Process

Mercari shares are clawing back losses after Pokémon card listing restrictions triggered a selloff earlier this week.

Mercari Bans Pikachu, Destroys Portfolio in the Process

Mercari restricted Pokémon card listings. The stock dropped. Now it's clawing back. That's the headline.

The Japanese online marketplace decided trading card speculation had gotten out of hand. Someone in a boardroom made a decision. Investors responded by dumping shares like they'd just discovered the company's entire business model depended on grown adults trading cartoon monsters printed on cardboard. Which, to be fair, a non-zero percentage of it does.

The shares are recovering now. Brave souls are buying the dip on an e-commerce platform that just told a significant chunk of its user base to f*ck off. These are the same people who think technical support lines represent buying opportunities.

Here's what happened in chart terms: price went down, then price went back up. That's called volatility. It means nothing. The stock could've done this because the CEO sneezed during an earnings call. The Pokémon cards are irrelevant. The restriction is irrelevant. The fact that Mercari exists is borderline irrelevant.

But retail traders needed a story. They got one about Charizards and compliance policies. They sold in a panic. Then they bought in a panic. The price moved exactly how it was going to move anyway, and someone wrote a headline to explain it after the fact.

Imagine waking up, checking your portfolio, and realizing you lost money because a company cracked down on people selling Squirtle. Imagine that being your actual financial reality. Now imagine doubling down after the bounce because you think the worst is over.

The worst is never over when you're buying stocks based on collectible card game policy updates.
