Sen. Chris Murphy had a stroke Saturday. He is "awake and alert," per chief of staff Allison Herwitt. Doctors are encouraged. Johns Hopkins has him. He is 53. Everyone expects a full recovery.
Good news. Now the bad news. Someone on a trading forum is already asking whether this moves the Connecticut muni bond curve.
It does not.
Murphy felt numbness in his arm at his son's hockey game. A hockey game. Parents there scream at teenagers over icing calls. Murphy noticed a medical emergency in the middle of that. That is situational awareness. Your situational awareness is buying a call option because a guy on Reddit used rocket emojis.
His office says he was campaigning for Democrats ahead of Tuesday's midterms. Retail traders will now build a thesis. They will draw a line from his hospital bed to the Russell 2000. They will call it a head-and-shoulders pattern. It is a man in a hospital gown.
I looked at the chart. There is no chart. A senator is recovering. The S&P 500 does not own a cardiologist.
Politicians get sick. Markets open Monday. Your portfolio stays down. Only one of these facts involves Chris Murphy, and it is the one where he gets better.
Get well, Senator. Your recovery will outperform every position held by the guy asking about muni bonds.
