Elon Musk spent the week nodding along with Sam Altman and Dario Amodei about AI safety. The same Elon Musk who sued OpenAI. Twice. The same guy who called Altman a liar on X dot com roughly four hundred times in the past eighteen months.
But sure. Common ground. They all care deeply about keeping the robots from killing us while they race to build the exact robots that might kill us.
Trump contradicted him. Jensen Huang contradicted him. Musk keeps talking up AI safety regulations except when those regulations might slow down his own AI company, at which point regulation becomes tyranny. Wild how that works.
The alliances make perfect sense if you ignore every single thing these people have said and done for the past three years. Musk agrees AI needs guardrails. He also thinks guardrails are for p*ssies. He wants oversight. He also wants the government to f*ck off forever. He trusts these CEOs. He also thinks they are frauds.
Retail traders watched this unfold and immediately started gaming out which AI stock to buy. They saw contradictions from the President and Nvidia's CEO and thought yeah, this is fine, I will base my financial future on whatever Musk tweets next Thursday. A man who changes positions faster than a compass in a microwave.
The strange alliances aren't strange. They are marketing. Everyone gets to look responsible while doing exactly what they planned to do anyway. Musk gets to play both sides. The CEOs get to pretend they want someone to stop them. Nobody wants to be stopped.
Trump and Jensen Huang said the quiet part loud and Musk just kept talking. That is the whole story. A week of noise that will matter for approximately zero trading days.
