Nvidia Agrees to Cosign OpenAI's Lease Like a Disappointed Father

Nvidia will backstop $250 billion in debt so OpenAI can build a data center in Pike County, Ohio. Read that again. A chip company is cosigning a loan for a chatbot maker to erect servers in a place most people couldn't find on a map if you spotted them the state.

This is the corporate equivalent of your roommate asking you to guarantee his car loan because he spent his savings on NFTs. Except the car costs a quarter trillion dollars and runs on electricity that could power Delaware.

OpenAI needs Nvidia's credit rating because apparently burning through investor cash at a rate that would make a defense contractor blush doesn't qualify you for favorable lending terms. Banks looked at Sam Altman's business plan and said we'll need someone responsible on this paperwork.

Pike County gets a data center. Nvidia gets exposure to whatever fresh hell emerges when OpenAI's revenue model finally has to make sense. And you get to watch from the sidelines while two companies that have never turned a profit between themβ€”wait, Nvidia prints money, OpenAI loses itβ€”construct the world's most expensive electricity bill in Appalachia.

The backstop works like this: OpenAI borrows against Nvidia's balance sheet, builds the campus, and presumably fills it with machines that generate poems about your dog until the power grid begs for mercy. If OpenAI defaults, Nvidia owns a bunch of real estate in Ohio and several thousand GPUs that are already obsolete.

Retail traders will see this headline and assume it's bullish. They'll buy calls on both stocks and congratulate themselves for understanding the AI revolution. Then they'll check their accounts in six months and wonder why cosigning someone else's debt wasn't the galaxy brain move they thought it was.

Nothing says we believe in our financial stability like needing someone else's credit score to rent office space.
