Nvidia Beats Every Number and Still Loses Money for You

Over the past year, Nvidia has topped estimates on all the topline metrics and has still been punished by investors the next trading day.

Nvidia Beats Every Number and Still Loses Money for You

Nvidia beat estimates. Stock went down. Nvidia beat estimates again. Stock went down. This happened four consecutive quarters. Retail traders kept buying the dip.

The company posts record revenue. Guides higher than Wall Street expected. Crushes earnings per share. The stock opens down three percent the next morning because apparently none of that matters anymore. Analysts call this an "expectations premium." That's finance speak for you're f*cked either way.

Here's the game. Nvidia has to beat estimates by more than it beat them last time. But last time it beat them by more than the time before that. So now the company needs to post numbers that would've seemed psychotic two years ago just to keep the stock flat. Miss by a penny and you lose your kid's college fund before lunch.

Investors created a treadmill that speeds up every quarter. Nvidia keeps running faster. The treadmill keeps accelerating. Eventually the company will report that it sold AI chips to God himself and the stock will drop five percent because analysts expected them to sell chips to two Gods.

The topline metrics don't matter. The guidance doesn't matter. The margin expansion doesn't matter. What matters is that some guy at Morgan Stanley decided Nvidia needed to beat by 8% instead of 7% this quarter and your Robinhood account is now worth less than a used Toyota.

Retail traders see Nvidia beat estimates and think they're buying success. They're actually buying a stock that gets graded on a curve designed by people who hate them. Every quarter the curve gets steeper. Every quarter they act surprised when they lose money on good news.

The analysts are watching to see if Nvidia can keep beating expectations that assume the company will cure cancer while also solving world hunger. The rest of us are watching retail traders discover that winning isn't winning when the goal posts have jetpacks.
