Nvidia Buys $21 Billion of Nothing Through a Different Nothing

Nvidia disclosed a $21 billion stake in SpaceX. Except they didn't buy SpaceX. They bought xAI. Which apparently owns SpaceX. Or has exposure to SpaceX. Or looked at a picture of a rocket once and called it an investment.

The stake was worth $21 billion at the end of the second quarter. Not now. Not when you're reading this. The end of the second quarter. Which means by the time Nvidia filed the paperwork, the number was already wrong. But sure, let's all pretend $21 billion means something when the valuation changes faster than you can refresh your brokerage app.

Here's what happened. Nvidia made so much money selling GPUs to everyone building AI models that they ran out of things to buy. So they invested in xAI. Elon's AI company. Which somehow gives them SpaceX exposure. Because why wouldn't an AI company also be a SpaceX holding vehicle? Makes perfect sense. Just like how your checking account is also a Wendy's franchise.

Retail traders saw this headline and immediately started Googling "how to buy xAI stock." You can't. It's private. But that won't stop them from buying Nvidia and pretending they're basically astronauts now. They'll tell their friends they're "getting SpaceX exposure through a derivative play." Their friends will nod. Nobody knows what any of this means.

The best part? Nvidia's core business is selling chips. They're so good at it they have $21 billion lying around to throw at whatever Elon's doing this week. They could've bought Treasury bonds. They could've returned cash to shareholders. Instead they're playing six degrees of separation with a rocket company.

Congratulations to everyone who thinks this headline contains actionable information. You now own a piece of a chip company that owns a piece of an AI company that owns a piece of a rocket company, and you still can't afford the f*cking rocket.
