OpenAI needs $30 billion to reach an IPO that has no date. That's a bridge to a destination.
CNBC says the round is "opportunistic." Translation: investors showed up in September with checkbooks, and OpenAI didn't have the willpower to say no.
The valuation is $1.25 trillion. That's before the new cash goes in. Add the $30 billion and you get about $1.28 trillion. Nobody cut the price over the extra $30 billion. They rounded in OpenAI's favor like a waiter splitting a check with a billionaire.
UAE investors are leading, with Coatue alongside. OpenAI is also negotiating a deal for computing capacity from the UAE. So the money comes in, and a chunk of it presumably goes right back out the door for compute. It's the world's most expensive layaway plan.
OpenAI reportedly told investors it expects to spend about $600 billion on computing infrastructure by 2030. Do the math. This round covers roughly 5 percent of that. The bridge is five percent of the way across the river.
The IPO is the other fun part. CFO Sarah Friar told employees in August it would happen in 2027. CEO Sam Altman reportedly said in September that now would be an ill-advised time to list. Two executives. Two opinions. One prospectus, filed confidentially in June, sitting in a drawer at the SEC like a casserole nobody asked for.
The price is also lower than the $1.4 trillion OpenAI had been pitching. That's a $150 billion haircut. Most people would call that a markdown. OpenAI calls it a Tuesday.
Retail traders will read this and want in. They can't. This is a private round. You can't buy a share, and your brokerage app will not help you. Stay home. Watch a stranger's rice cooker review. It's a better use of capital.
Anthropic is expected to list first. OpenAI is racing to set a private price before its rival shows the public what these things are worth. That's not a funding round. That's a guy bidding up his own house before the neighbor's open house.
Everyone involved is smart, rich, and confident. You are none of those, and the bridge isn't for you.
