REVOLVE Hires a 69-Year-Old to Reach Gen Z

REVOLVE cut a deal with Donatella Versace. The fashion retailer wants young consumers. Versace turns 70 next year.

Nothing says youth culture like a woman who started designing clothes when your target demographic's parents were in diapers. The strategy makes perfect sense if you squint hard enough to cause permanent retinal damage.

REVOLVE built its brand on Instagram influencers who can't legally rent a car without paying extra fees. Now they've pivoted to a creative director whose peak cultural moment was a 2018 Ryan Murphy miniseries. The kids are definitely logging on to see what Donatella thinks about crop tops.

This is what happens when a company confuses name recognition with relevance. Versace is a legacy brand. REVOLVE sells to people who think legacy means a phone feature. The Venn diagram of these audiences is two circles in different time zones.

Some retail analyst will call this a bold move. That same analyst probably thinks Sears could have saved itself by hiring Madonna. The partnership announcement likely tested well in a focus group of marketing executives who still say "on fleek" without irony.

REVOLVE's stock will do whatever it was going to do anyway because partnerships like this matter approximately as much as your opinion on Federal Reserve policy. Young consumers will either buy the clothes or they won't. Donatella's involvement changes nothing except the press release word count.

The real genius here is convincing shareholders that hiring a septuagenarian Italian designer is somehow youth strategy. It's the corporate equivalent of your dad joining TikTok to understand you better. Everyone involved gets paid. Nobody gets what they actually wanted.

Six months from now REVOLVE will announce another partnership with someone equally baffling and we'll all pretend it matters again.
