Senate Says No, Treasury Says Welcome Aboard

Judy Shelton wanted a seat on the Federal Reserve Board. The Senate looked at her economic ideas and said no. Now she works for the Treasury Department. This is how Washington handles controversial nominees. Wait six years and hire them anyway.

Bessent brought her on as a counselor. That's the title you give someone when you want them around but can't explain why in a job description. It's like Vice President but with less waiting for someone to die.

Shelton's big idea was tying the dollar to gold. The Senate heard that pitch and decided she'd be better off literally anywhere else. Bessent heard the same pitch and thought counselor to the Treasury secretary sounds perfect. These are the same economic theories. The only thing that changed was who got to say yes.

Retail traders saw this headline and immediately started googling what a counselor does. They found nothing useful. That's because the position exists to park people who have opinions but shouldn't have authority. It's a participation trophy with a West Wing office.

The best part is Shelton's nomination failed because senators thought her views were too dangerous for the Fed. Too dangerous for the institution that sets interest rates and controls monetary policy. But apparently just fine for the department that manages the entire federal budget. That's like getting rejected from clown college for being too silly and going straight to work at the circus.

Bessent made the hire. Shelton accepted. Somewhere a Senate staffer who spent months drafting opposition research is staring at a wall wondering what any of it was for.
