These two things happened in the same news cycle, which means some guy in Seoul woke up and decided his country's strategic priority should be securing oil shipping lanes 5,000 miles away.
The operation is called Economic Outcast. Someone in Washington got paid to name it that. They workshopped it. They ran it up the chain. A committee approved it. Your tax dollars funded a conference room full of people who landed on Economic Outcast and felt good about themselves.
Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz. Close it and 21% of global oil moves through other routes or doesn't move at all. Reopen it and oil futures traders pretend they understood geopolitical risk the whole time. Either way some retail clown in Michigan just bought calls on an energy ETF because his brother-in-law forwarded him a YouTube video.
South Korea weighing military involvement is the diplomatic equivalent of showing up to a bar fight you saw on Instagram three days later. The EU already committed. The sanctions are formal. Seoul is still in the group chat asking if they should bring chips.
None of this moves the needle on your portfolio. Iran gets sanctioned every eighteen months like clockwork. The Strait closes, the Strait opens, someone threatens someone, and crude spikes for six hours before algos flatten it back out. You'll read sixteen headlines about escalation and de-escalation before anything actual happens.
