Supreme Court Justice Discovers Job Security

Alito plans to stay on the Supreme Court even if Democrats regain the Senate. This counts as news because apparently someone thought he might resign based on which party controls a different branch of government.

The report suggests Alito's decision hinges on Senate composition. Lifetime appointments work differently now. You get lifetime tenure but check the polls first. Very constitutional. The founders would be proud they invented a system where justices announce their retirement plans based on partisan electoral outcomes then clarify they won't actually do that.

Three justices were nominated by Trump. Alito was nominated by Bush. These are facts a remedial civics class could teach you but here we are packaging them as breaking news because a 74-year-old man said he likes his job.

Retail traders will read this headline and somehow find a way to go long on constitutional crisis ETFs that don't exist. They'll create a Discord server called "SCOTUS Gamma Squeeze" and convince themselves that judicial philosophy has a technical setup. Some guy named Derek will post a 47-slide presentation explaining why Alito staying on the court means you should buy call options on companies that manufacture gavels.

The Supreme Court has six conservative justices. Alito is one of them. He sits on the court. He will continue sitting on the court. This revelation required a full news report with a headline and a summary because we've reached the point where a man doing his job until he decides not to qualifies as journalism.

Alito wrote the Dobbs decision then apparently decided he enjoys the controversy enough to stick around for the sequel.
