Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta signed a letter asking regulators to pump the brakes on open-weight AI model restrictions. They framed this as a principled stance on innovation. Chinese companies are eating their lunch with open-weight models that work just as well and cost nothing.
OpenAI and Anthropic did not sign the letter. They build closed models. They charge subscription fees. They have no incentive to defend the thing making them obsolete. The signatories build chips, cloud infrastructure, and a social network your aunt uses to share minion memes. They need open-weight models to stay legal so someone keeps buying their shovels during the gold rush.
The letter warns against premature restrictions. Premature means before we figure out how to compete. Restrictions means anything that slows down the Chinese labs currently dunking on us. This is corporate strategy dressed up as philosophy. It's three kids in a trench coat pretending to be a civil liberties organization.
Retail traders will read this headline and buy Nvidia calls because the words artificial intelligence appeared near the word Microsoft. They will not notice that the letter exists because American companies are losing. They will not wonder why the actual AI leaders refused to sign. They will see line go up and feel smart.
The funniest part is that open-weight models were supposed to be the underdog play. The scrappy alternative to Big Tech. Now Big Tech is begging regulators to protect open-weight models from restrictions because Chinese engineers built better ones for free. Free beats expensive when the product works the same. Turns out commoditization happens fast when you open-source the whole goddamn thing.
The signatories sell hardware and cloud compute, not intelligence.
