Trump's lawyers wanted the deposition between Jan. 11 and Jan. 22. Magistrate Judge EnjoliquΓ© Lett wanted it by Dec. 11. Call it a negotiation. One side negotiated. The other side had a gavel.
The specifics are glorious. Trump sued the BBC for $10 billion. He is the plaintiff. Nobody dragged him into this. He walked into the building, filed the paperwork, and now acts like the building is haunted.
He had already agreed to sit on Oct. 16. Then he canceled for a "matter of national importance." BBC lawyer Charles Tobin told the court that, per the AP, the president was actually out campaigning. Campaigning is certainly a matter. Of importance, to somebody.
Tobin's complaint was simple. Two months left in discovery, and "we still haven't been able to depose the plaintiff." Imagine suing someone and then ghosting your own lawsuit. That's not litigation. That's a first date with a man who says he'll text you.
Lett also warned that noncompliance could get the whole case dismissed. A $10 billion claim, thrown out because the plaintiff had a scheduling conflict with himself.
The BBC admitted its editing of the Jan. 6 speech was bad. It apologized. Its director general and top news executive resigned. It still denies defaming him. Trump wanted a victory lap. He got a calendar invite.
Retail traders will call this bullish for something. Some of you will buy a media stock on the news. You will pick the wrong one. You always do. You once bought a company because its ticker looked like your dog's name.
The chart says nothing. The chart never says anything. But the calendar says Dec. 11, and calendars don't care how many billions you sued for.
Trump asked for January. He got December. Somewhere, a man who sues for a living is learning what "discovery" means.
