Trump rejected Iran's conditional ceasefire proposal because he's busy penciling in airstrikes for November. The Wall Street Journal reports he expects renewed U.S. bombing after the midterm elections. Not during. After. Apparently even military escalation has to wait for the campaign calendar.
The Saudi coalition intercepted projectiles while this negotiation theater played out. Someone fired something. Someone else blocked it. The usual.
Retail traders saw this headline and immediately started googling "oil stocks war premium." They found seventeen TikTok videos explaining why Raytheon calls print during conflict. They bought defense ETFs at the top. They will sell them at the bottom after the ceasefire they were just told wouldn't happen suddenly happens anyway.
The conditional ceasefire was conditional. That's the part that killed it. Iran wanted something. Trump wanted something else. Shocking that two parties who've hated each other for four decades couldn't find common ground in a Wall Street Journal article.
None of this moves futures more than a Fed governor coughing during a speech. None of this changes the chart. The 50-day moving average doesn't care about projectiles over Riyadh. It doesn't care about Trump's post-election bombing schedule. It doesn't care about your defense contractor shares.
But you bought them anyway because the headline had the word "Iran" in it and you remember oil spiking that one time in 2019. You don't remember it coming right back down. You don't remember that geopolitical risk premium evaporates faster than your stop-loss discipline.
The chart was already pointing down before Trump said no. It'll keep pointing down after he says yes. The only thing getting bombed here is your portfolio.
