TSMC Reports Earnings, Retail Traders Update LinkedIn Profiles

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company posted a 45% sales jump because everyone needs chips for AI. Nvidia needs them. Google needs them. Your cousin Brad needs to stop asking if he should buy semiconductor stocks.

TSMC makes the chips. They don't design them. They don't sell them to consumers. They manufacture tiny pieces of silicon that other companies turn into products that lose money for retail investors. It's a foundry. The word sounds important because it has three syllables.

The 45% surge means absolutely nothing about where the stock goes next. Could go up. Could go down. Could trade sideways while you refresh your brokerage app seventeen times before lunch. The sales number is backward-looking data about things that already happened. You're trading forward-looking delusions about things that haven't.

Big Tech is buying chips because AI is the current reason to spend money. Last year it was the metaverse. Before that it was blockchain. Before that it was saying the word synergy in conference rooms. The product changes. The hype cycle doesn't.

Financial journalists watch TSMC's numbers as a leading indicator of semiconductor demand. Leading indicator is a fancy term for guessing what happens next based on what happened before. Works great until it doesn't. Then everyone acts surprised that past performance doesn't guarantee future results, which is literally printed on every disclosure form you didn't read.

Buoyant is doing a lot of work in that headline. Buoyant means floating. Floating means not sinking yet. The Titanic was buoyant for two hours and forty minutes.

TSMC's customers are flush with cash and spending it on capacity. Capacity they may or may not need in eighteen months when the AI trade either justifies itself or joins 3D televisions in the graveyard of things that were definitely the future. But sure, extrapolate quarterly revenue into infinity and see where that gets you.
