Meta released Muse Glimmer and announced it will open source Muse Spark 1.2 weights because Mark Zuckerberg decided the best way to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic is to give away his technology for free. Brilliant strategy. Really nailing that whole capitalism thing.
The move positions Meta as the champion of open source AI development while Zuckerberg lectures about U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence. A man who built an empire on harvesting your aunt's vaccine conspiracy theories now wants to lead America's technological future. Inspiring stuff.
OpenAI charges money for its models. Anthropic charges money for its models. Meta gives its models away and calls this a business strategy. The company that spent $46 billion on the metaverse apparently learned nothing about monetization. They're applying the same financial acumen that brought you Horizon Worlds to the AI race.
Retail traders will see open source and think it means the stock goes up because more developers equals more innovation equals moon. They will not ask why a profitable company is handing out its most powerful technology like free samples at Costco. They will not wonder if maybe the models aren't actually that good if Meta can't find anyone willing to pay for them.
Zuckerberg takes a swipe at competitors by doing the exact opposite of what makes them successful. Sam Altman builds a closed ecosystem worth billions. Dario Amodei raises money at a $60 billion valuation. Zuck responds by ctrl-alt-deleting his competitive advantage and posting the weights on GitHub.
The man wore a tie to Congress once and somehow convinced himself he should shape national AI policy. Now he's releasing Muse Spark to defend American technological dominance against threats he won't name in countries he won't specify. Nothing says geopolitical strategy like weaponizing the download button.
