Two Companies Do Exactly What They Always Do

Meta dropped 8%. Microsoft climbed 15%. The market called this a "split in the AI trade" because calling it "two different stocks moved in different directions" would not justify anyone's salary.

Azure grew. Copilot sold subscriptions. Microsoft reported numbers that beat estimates, which is what happens when you spend a decade teaching analysts to expect less than you plan to deliver. The stock jumped because investors remembered they own Microsoft.

Meta missed revenue guidance. Free cash flow collapsed. Zuckerberg is burning money on a metaverse nobody asked for and AI infrastructure that may or may not work, which is somehow different from what he did last quarter. The stock sank 8%, continuing what the headline calls a "record losing streak." Record implies this is unusual. Meta stock dropping is like rain in Seattle. Calling it record-breaking does not make it weather.

Retail traders saw the Microsoft pop and bought calls at the top. They saw the Meta dip and bought shares to "average down," which is a term people use when they want to lose money twice on the same position. One of them posted a screenshot showing a $40,000 loss with the caption "Still believe in the vision." The vision is a cartoon office where legless avatars attend meetings. He'll be broke before the vision includes functional arms.

The news stories explain the moves with fundamentals. Azure growth rates. Copilot adoption metrics. Meta's declining margins. None of it mattered until the numbers printed, and none of it will matter next week when both stocks move for completely different reasons that analysts will also explain with perfect clarity in retrospect.

Microsoft bulls are geniuses today. Meta bulls are catching a falling knife. Next month the roles reverse and the same people will explain why that makes sense too. The AI trade didn't splitβ€”two stocks did what stocks do, and everyone pretended the reasons mattered.
