Two Guys Meet, Accomplish Nothing, Call It Diplomacy

Trump and Xi spent two days in Washington delivering exactly what the headline promised: spectacle over substance. They smiled for cameras. They ate expensive food. They discussed Taiwan and Iran the way you discuss politics with your aunt at Thanksgivingβ€”carefully avoiding anything that might require actual commitment.

The ceremony was heavy. The deliverables were light. This is diplomatic code for "we threw a party and pretended it mattered." Retail traders monitoring this for market signals might as well have been reading tea leaves or checking their horoscopes. Both would have provided equivalent actionable intelligence.

They danced around Taiwan. They danced around Iran. Presumably they also danced around trade policy, intellectual property theft, and whether the shrimp cocktail was fresh. None of it moved any needle that matters to your portfolio. None of it changed a single technical level on a single chart. But some guy in Michigan definitely refreshed his news feed forty times hoping this summit would explain why his tech calls are down 60%.

The most impressive part was convincing people this deserved coverage. Two world leaders meet and agree to keep meeting. This is news the same way "local man eats lunch" is news. It happened. It involved people. Nobody's life changed.

State visits exist so both sides can tell their domestic audiences they accomplished something without the hassle of accomplishing anything. It's performance art with flags. The substance was always going to be zero because substance requires one side giving something up, and neither Trump nor Xi flew across the Pacific to lose a negotiation on camera.

Your technical indicators didn't care about this yesterday. They don't care about it today. They won't care about it tomorrow when the next diplomatic nothing-burger gets served with a different sauce.
