Meta released a piece of AI jewelry called Muse Charm. Beat OpenAI to market. OpenAI has been promising consumer hardware for months and currently sells nothing you can wear around your neck.
The Muse Charm listens to your voice and talks back. Clips onto your shirt. Costs money that could have been spent on literally anything else. Zuckerberg calls this winning the AI device race.
OpenAI spent two years telling investors they would revolutionize human-computer interaction with groundbreaking hardware. Meta shipped a charm bracelet with a microphone. This is what winning looks like in 2026.
The strategy remains unproven according to people who get paid to write those words. Unproven means nobody knows if consumers want to buy voice-activated accessories from the company that brought you the metaverse. Same company that spent $40 billion on VR headsets nobody uses.
Retail traders saw the headline and bought Meta calls. Figured first to market means first to profit. These are the same people who thought Google Glass was going to change everything. Glass lasted two years. The Muse Charm has existed for three days.
The charm connects to Meta's AI agents. Agents that will presumably do tasks for you. Tasks you could do yourself by opening your phone. But now you can do them while wearing what looks like a Fitbit that fell off and landed on your collar.
OpenAI has no response yet. Probably busy training GPT-6 on another few trillion tokens. Definitely not scrambling to design their own wearable before investors ask why Meta shipped first. Sam Altman probably opened his closet this morning looking for something to clip a microphone onto.
First to market with a product nobody asked for is still first to market.
