Ceasefire Covers One City. Russia Covers the Rest.

Melania Trump brokered a ceasefire. For one city. Oleshky, population roughly 1,700, according to Ukrainian authorities.

That is not a ceasefire. That is a reservation at a restaurant with a very small waiting room.

The pause began at 3:00 a.m. Kyiv time Tuesday. Russia's defense ministry said it stopped shelling toward Oleshky at the same moment. Good. Then Russia launched missiles and drones at cities across Ukraine. Also Tuesday. Possibly before lunch.

Think about the logistics. A Russian artillery crew gets a memo. Do not shoot at Oleshky. Shoot at everywhere else. Somebody in Moscow owns a laminated map with one town highlighted in a gentle shade of "leave it."

The First Lady's office called her the "exclusive intermediary." Exclusive. As in, nobody else wanted the job. As in, the velvet rope outside Oleshky has a bouncer and the bouncer is a drone.

To be fair, the stated goal is humanitarian. Aid in. Elderly residents out. That part is real, and I will not joke about the grandmothers. I will joke about the press release, which says that without her intervention, aid and evacuation would be "impossible." Impossible. Her word. Written by her office. About herself.

Nobody could say how long it lasts. CNN reported the duration was unclear. A ceasefire with no end date is a lease with no landlord. Sooner or later someone knocks.

The White House also had the start date wrong at first. October 29, they said. It began October 27. Two days early. In the history of Russian diplomacy, that is the first thing to ever show up ahead of schedule.

Now the retail angle, since someone will ask. Some guy with a Robinhood account and a Ukraine flag in his bio will call this bullish. He will buy defense stocks off a one-town truce. He will hold them through a Tuesday full of missiles. He will say "the fundamentals are strong." He lives in his mother's basement and calls it a position.

Russia bombed the country and spared one town, and somehow the town is the headline.
