CoreWeave Stock Drops 29%, Credit Default Swaps Clear Their Throat

CoreWeave is down 29% in October. Its credit default swap spreads are widening. Bond investors, the only adults in the building, are checking the exits.

A credit default swap is insurance against a company not paying its debts. The price of that insurance is going up. Somebody looked at CoreWeave and asked, "What if this goes badly?" Then they paid money to find out.

Stock traders hear "widening spreads" and think it's a yoga stretch.

Bond guys are different. Bond guys don't have a Discord. They don't post rocket emojis. They read covenants for fun, and they have never once been happy. When they get nervous, you should be nervous too.

Retail traders bought CoreWeave because it sounded like a weather event and a mattress company had a baby. They called it "the AI trade." Nobody could explain the AI part. They just knew the chart went up and the CEO owned a nice jacket.

Now the stock is down 29% in a single month. That's not a dip. A dip is what you do with a chip. This is a man being walked off a pier by his own conviction.

The technical picture is simple. Line goes down. Insurance on the line goes up. The people who sell the insurance are charging more because they've seen the line.

I'm told the long-term thesis is intact. The thesis is always intact. It's the money that leaves.

Some of you will buy more. You'll call it averaging down. Your wife will call it something else, and she'll be on the phone with a lawyer when she does.

CoreWeave's bonds are now priced like a promise from a guy who says he's "good for it." The market has met that guy before, and it keeps its wallet in the front pocket.

Hold your shares, champ. The bondholders will be nice enough to tell you how it ended.
