Hegseth fired Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia this week. Sylvia ran strategy, plans and policy on the Joint Staff. The J5. The guy with the plan.
No replacement has been named. The United States is in month eight of an Iran war and the planning desk is a chair.
The reasons are a mess. A Pentagon official told CBS News that Sylvia failed three polygraphs about sharing classified information with the press. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell never named him, but said the department took "necessary personnel action." The case went to the Justice Department.
Then the Joint Staff issued a statement thanking Sylvia for 32 years of distinguished service. Then it retracted that statement. Upon further review, it said, the thank-you did not reflect the full circumstances. That's a Hallmark card with a recall notice.
Sylvia is the second J5 Hegseth has pushed out. His predecessor, Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee, was forced to retire last October. Two for two. Hegseth treats this job like a Spinal Tap drummer slot.
Meanwhile, Trump says he is deciding whether to "make a deal" with Iran or "finish it off." He has also denied that peace talks are happening. Iran says it is in contact with intermediaries about a 7-day plan. So one side has a plan. The other side just lost the guy who writes them.
Retail traders will now buy oil calls based on this. They will read "Strait of Hormuz" and "midterms" and build a thesis out of a Reddit thread and a feeling. Their conviction is the only thing in this story that has been through zero polygraphs.
The Pentagon has no top planner, no stated reason it can stand behind, and a president who won't say whether he's talking or bombing.
Somewhere a retail trader is calling that a catalyst.
