Amazon added Kevin Mandia to its board. Mandia founded Mandiant. Mandiant cleaned up after every major data breach you forgot about three news cycles later. He sold the company to Google in 2022 for five billion dollars. Then he left Google two years ago. Now he works for Amazon.
This is what passes for cybersecurity expertise at the board level. A guy who made his fortune telling companies their passwords got stolen shows up to four meetings a year. He collects stock options. He nods during PowerPoint presentations about AWS growth metrics. Revolutionary.
Mandia spent decades watching corporations ignore basic security protocols until ransomware locked their systems. He built an empire on that predictable stupidity. Google bought that empire. Google apparently didn't need him around after the check cleared. Amazon looked at that resume and thought perfect, that's our guy.
Retail traders will read this headline and think cybersecurity play. They'll buy Amazon calls at a three percent premium. They'll explain to their wife's boyfriend that board appointments signal institutional confidence. They'll ignore that Amazon already employs fourteen thousand security engineers who actually do the work while Mandia reads quarterly reports on a yacht.
The funniest part is not that Amazon needed a cybersecurity expert on the board. It's that they hired one whose main qualification is knowing how much companies will pay after they f*ck up. That's not strategy. That's disaster tourism with equity compensation.
