Borrowers Discover Credit Reports Don't Update Themselves

Student loan borrowers filed suit against the Education Department because their forgiven debts still show up on credit reports. Years after the government wiped the slate clean. Years.

The borrowers claim financial damages. They got their loans forgiven but the credit bureaus never got the memo. Or they got the memo and filed it next to the fax machine that hasn't worked since 2009. Either way, these people have been walking around with dead debt on their reports like financial zombies. Can't get a mortgage. Can't lease a car. Can't convince anyone they're solvent enough to finance a Peloton they'll use twice.

Here's the thing about forgiven debt: it has to be reported as forgiven. Wild concept. The Education Department forgave the loans but apparently forgot to tell Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. You know, the three companies whose entire business model is knowing whether you paid your bills. They just missed this one. Slipped through the cracks. No big deal except for the borrowers who spent years applying for credit and getting rejected because their reports said they still owed money they didn't owe.

The lawsuit alleges the department failed to update the credit reporting agencies. Which means someone at the Education Department clicked "forgive debt" and then immediately forgot that credit reports exist. Forgot that these reports matter. Forgot that people use them to buy houses and cars and convince landlords they won't skip town in the middle of the night.

So now we've got borrowers who won the student loan lotteryβ€”actual forgivenessβ€”but lost anyway because nobody bothered to update the paperwork. They got forgiveness in theory but not in practice. Like getting a promotion with no raise or a gym membership you can't use because the door's locked.

The government forgave your debt but your credit score still thinks you're a deadbeat.
