CXMT Earnings: A Date With Disappointment

Chang Xin Memory Technologies reports earnings October 31st. Retail traders have marked their calendars. They've set reminders. They've told their wives this is the one.

CXMT makes memory chips in China. The headline says it has "global potential." Know what else has global potential? Every company that hasn't failed yet. The bar is underground.

The technical setup doesn't care about potential. Price either goes up or it doesn't. Right now it's doing neither with conviction, which means some poor f*cker is holding bags while telling himself he's early.

Analysts love the memory chip sector because it gives them something to say. Demand cycles. Supply constraints. Geopolitical positioning. All fancy ways to describe guessing, except with a Bloomberg Terminal open in the background.

Here's the trade: CXMT beats estimates, stock drops because estimates were too low. CXMT misses estimates, stock drops because it missed. CXMT meets estimates exactly, stock drops because there's no surprise. Pattern recognition isn't hard when the pattern is always red.

The real comedy is "poised to outperform." Poised is what you say when nothing has happened yet but you need a headline anyway. It's the financial media equivalent of saying a team is poised to win before kickoff. Means nothing. Sounds like something.

October 31st some retail trader will watch those earnings, convince himself he sees something the market missed, and buy calls at the absolute worst price. He'll hold through November telling himself it's a long-term play. By December he'll be explaining to his family why Christmas is "more about togetherness anyway."

The chart will keep doing what it was always going to do, which is whatever hurts the most people possible. CXMT's global potential remains theoretical, much like your profits.
